walmer community centre

The Walmer Country Club in Victoria Dive, Walmer, Port Elizabeth was selected as the proposed building for the Community Centre.

My aim for the project is to create a safe environment where the community will create networks, learn life enriching skills and have a space where they feel like they belong. The proposed development of a community centre will not only enhance the social wellbeing of the community it will also create job opportunities for the people in the surrounding areas.

Once i knew what i wanted to propose for the building it was important for me to get out into the community and ask various individuals within the area what they though a community centre meant to them.

SPACES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE.

when designing a space for people it is important to understand their needs as people living in a developed area have different needs to those living in poverty stricken rural areas.

i decided to speak to my nanny about what spaces would benefit her.

this is the list we compiled :

• Driving school

• Gym classes

• Veggie garden

• Small fresh produce shop

• Bread making

• Pottery classes

• Weaving workshop

• Print making (textiles)

• Skills development centre

• School for the elderly

I will be asking more people (of all ages, sex and cultural backgrounds) living in the Walmer Township what spaces would benefit them.

A site visit will be done on monday 26th Feburary to analyse the building - see next post !
